Recruiting Roundup: Unveiling the Elite SEC Commit's Visit to Michigan
The Recruiting Dead Period is Over: A New Wave of Talent Heads to Ann Arbor
As the calendar flips to March, the recruiting dead period officially ends, and the Michigan Wolverines are gearing up for a surge of high-profile visitors. Among the top recruits setting their sights on Ann Arbor is a five-star player with a commitment that could shake up the SEC.
Five-Star SEC Commit's Unexpected Visit to Michigan
Donte Wright, a five-star cornerback from Long Beach, California, is currently committed to Georgia, but the Wolverines are making a strong case for a visit. Wright, standing at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, has been a target for several programs, including Michigan, which is working hard to secure his official visit.
In a recent interview, Wright expressed his interest in Michigan, stating, "They've reached out a tad bit. I feel like they're still trying to get their staff together, so I should hear from them more a little later, but soon. They've reached out, said their hellos a little bit, but that's about it. I'm trying to plan an OV with them, for sure."
The new coaching staff's visit to his high school in January seems to have made a positive impression, as they assured him that he could see the field as a true freshman. Wright's enthusiasm for Michigan's early playing opportunities is a significant factor in his consideration.
With a desire to make a final decision in July after taking official visits, Wright's recruitment is heating up. Oregon, USC, Oklahoma, and UCLA are also in the mix, but Michigan's persistent pursuit and the potential for early playing time could be game-changers.
Five-Star Defensive Lineman's Double Visit to Michigan
Marcus Fakatou, a 6-foot-6 and 275-pound five-star defensive lineman, is another elite recruit with a strong connection to Michigan. According to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider, Fakatou has scheduled two visits to Ann Arbor, with an unofficial visit on April 11-12 and an official visit on June 15-17. He will also take official visits to Ohio State, Texas, and Oregon.
The timing of his official visit is particularly intriguing, as it falls on a Monday-Wednesday, making him a likely sole recruit on campus. This could be a strategic move by Michigan, as Adam Gorney of Rivals reports that the Wolverines have taken the lead in his recruitment. Fakatou's confidence in the new coaching staff and their recruiting efforts is evident in his words, "I'm just very confident with it. The relationship I built over there with the new d-line coach (Larry Black) and coach (Lewis) Powell, they’ve just done a good job recruiting me. I feel really confident with them."
While Notre Dame is also in the running, the departure of defensive line coach Al Washington might have shifted the dynamics in Michigan's favor.
Four-Star Cornerback's Sole Official Visit to Michigan
Darius Johnson, a 2027 four-star cornerback from California, has set his sights on Michigan for his official visit during the weekend of June 19, as reported by Blair Angulo of 247Sports. This visit holds significance as it is his only official visit scheduled thus far.
Johnson's interest in Michigan stems from the program's winning culture and the strong relationship he shares with new corners coach Jernaro Gilford, who offered him an early scholarship. The defensive coordinator, Jay Hill, has also played a pivotal role in his recruitment, dating back to his time at BYU.
Johnson's enthusiasm for Michigan is evident in his words, "What stands out is how much they win and they are known for winning and putting many DBs out. It’s just a great program overall. I have a great relationship with all the staff as I have been familiar since they were over in Utah. Coach Jernaro Gilford offered me my first offer freshman year when he was at BYU, so he was the first coach to really see the potential in me and we have had a great relationship since."
With other schools like Oregon, Cal, Oklahoma, UCLA, and USC also in the mix, Michigan's recruitment efforts are paying off, and the Wolverines are poised to land some top-tier talent.
