The recent development allows DBS Bank users to directly transfer funds to their WeChat Pay e-wallets, eliminating the need for additional fees when making payments via merchant QR codes. This is a significant improvement for travelers who previously faced charges when using linked credit or debit cards.
Victoria Goh, an account manager who travels to China frequently, has embraced this change. She no longer incurs the 3% fee on transactions over 200 yuan, making her purchases more cost-effective. This shift is particularly beneficial for those who frequently use WeChat Pay for rides, shopping, and dining.
The expansion of payment options is a result of Chinese payment giant TenPay Global's decision to open up its remittance service to foreign passport holders. This move follows similar initiatives by OCBC Bank, which has enabled its Singapore customers to scan WeChat Pay merchant QR codes directly through the OCBC app since February. The ability to avoid third-party app fees has been a game-changer for travelers, who can now rely on a more straightforward and cost-effective payment method.
Financial adviser Ryan Lok and media professional Carol Ang have also praised these new features. Lok plans to utilize DBS's and OCBC's new offerings during his upcoming trip, highlighting the potential savings. Ang, who often encounters payment issues at smaller food stalls, appreciates the added convenience of being able to remit funds directly to WeChat Pay. The fact that most shops in China do not accept foreign bank-issued credit cards makes these new payment options even more valuable.
DBS, along with 60 major banks and institutions globally, works with TenPay Global to facilitate cross-border remittance for non-Chinese citizens. The goal is to achieve ubiquitous connectivity across the global financial ecosystem. OCBC Bank has also expanded its services, allowing customers to scan UnionPay and Alipay QR codes since 2023 and 2024, respectively. The inclusion of WeChat Pay QR codes has further enhanced the ease of payment for Singapore travelers in China.
The convenience and cost savings offered by these expanded payment options are particularly appealing to travelers like Teng Xin Yi, who prefers the simplicity of using a single app for payments.
