PSL's Historic Reform: Auction Model, Player Retention, and More! (2026)

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is shaking things up with a groundbreaking reform: an auction-based player recruitment system. This marks a significant departure from the league's previous draft system, which has been in place for a decade. After months of debate and uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to overhaul the recruitment process, aiming to boost competition, transparency, and player earnings. But here's where it gets controversial: the new system will lead to the biggest player migration in the league's history, causing some franchises to let go of their best performers.

The PSL's player retention rules have also been overhauled. Previously, each franchise could retain up to eight players from the previous season. With the addition of two new teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot, this became unmanageable. The conflict between existing franchises wanting to keep their top players and new teams wanting access to a higher-quality pool of talent led to a compromise. The number of retentions has been halved to four, with only one retention per category allowed. This means franchises can only keep one player in the Platinum, Diamond, Gold, or Silver categories, significantly reducing the number of players they can retain.

The unpicked players will enter an open pool, available to Hyderabad and Sialkot, each of which can sign four players before the auction. The auction process itself is still unclear, but it's expected to be a significant change from the traditional draft system. Each franchise will also be allowed to sign one player directly, outside the auction, with team purses increased to USD 1.6 million. This direct signing is only applicable for players who didn't participate in the previous PSL season.

These reforms represent the most significant changes to the PSL's player recruitment structure, leading to a massive player migration. The PCB's decision comes after pushback from franchises during meetings, and the auction date and Multan Sultans' ownership structure remain uncertain. The deadline for technical bids is January 30, 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the league's history.
