A recent national survey by Marquette Law School unveils a sharp divide in public sentiment regarding the performance of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly referred to as ICE. The findings reveal that only 40% of adults across the nation express approval of ICE's operations, while a significant 60% voice disapproval. This stark contrast raises important questions about the agency's role and effectiveness in immigration enforcement.
But here's where it gets controversial: the survey was conducted following the tragic shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, although most interviews were completed before the incident involving Alex Pretti, which occurred on January 24. This timing suggests that perceptions of ICE could be heavily influenced by recent events, perhaps leading to a heightened sense of scrutiny over the agency's methods.
Amaad Rivera-Wagner, a Democrat and representative for Wisconsin's 90th Assembly District, interprets these poll results as indicative of a widespread consensus against current enforcement practices. "The way I see it, the numbers are telling us that more than 60% of the public is dissatisfied with how ICE operates," he explains. "This opposition spans both political aisles—it's not just a partisan issue; it resonates across states and communities, regardless of political affiliation."
Conducted between January 21 and 28, this survey involved interviews with 1,003 adult participants nationwide, carrying a margin of error of +/-3.4 percentage points. Among registered voters, the sample size was 869, with a margin of error of +/-3.6, and for likely voters, there were 577 participants, with a margin of error of +/-4.4 percentage points.

In addition to the primary findings, there are several noteworthy insights from the survey:

Following the release of these poll results, border czar Tom Homan announced plans to withdraw 700 federal troops from Minneapolis, prompting reactions from Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin who acknowledge that reforms within ICE could be beneficial.
"I believe additional training for ICE agents could be advantageous," states Rep. Glenn Grothman from Wisconsin's 6th District. "However, we cannot abandon our commitment to deporting individuals who are here illegally. It's crucial to remember that around eight million people entered the country during the Biden administration, and we must continue to address this issue."
Rep. Tony Wied from the 8th District echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of ongoing improvements. "There's always potential for enhancement in any area of law enforcement. We're implementing body cameras as part of our efforts to ensure transparency and accountability, and it's essential to continually seek best practices to equip ICE with the necessary tools for effective law enforcement."
Interestingly, public opinion on deportations has remained largely unchanged since November. At present, 56% support deporting undocumented immigrants, compared to 44% who oppose such measures. Previously, in November, the figures were 58% in favor and 42% against.
Among supporters of deportation, approximately one-third (35%) disapprove of the manner in which ICE conducts its immigration enforcement, while 65% approve of the agency's actions. Conversely, nearly all individuals opposing deportations (96%) express disapproval of ICE's handling of immigration issues.
When asked specifically about deportations concerning individuals who have lived in the U.S. for several years, maintained employment, and held no criminal records, the support for deportation drops to 44%, with 56% opposed—a figure consistent with prior polling data from November.
Those favoring the deportation of long-term residents without criminal records tend to have a more favorable view of ICE, with 78% approving of the agency's conduct. In contrast, a staggering 89% of those against deporting long-term residents without a criminal record disapprove of ICE, revealing a substantial rift in opinions regarding the agency’s enforcement practices.
The survey also highlights a notable perception disparity regarding deportees' criminal backgrounds. While 52% of respondents believe that most deported immigrants lack criminal records, 47% think the majority have criminal histories. Specifically, among Republicans, an overwhelming 83% assert that most deportees have criminal records, whereas 57% of independents and 86% of Democrats argue that most deportees do not.
Finally, President Trump's approval rating concerning immigration policy sits at 44%, with a disapproval rate of 56%. This marks a slight decline from November, when 45% approved and 55% disapproved of his immigration strategies, illustrating a downward trend since reaching a peak approval of 50% in May.
