The White House East Wing Expansion: A Detailed Look
The National Capital Planning Commission has released detailed drawings of the White House East Wing expansion project, offering a comprehensive view of the proposed addition. The project, designed by Shalom Baranes Associates, includes site plans, building plans, elevations, landscape drawings, and renders, providing an in-depth look at the expansion.
The expansion aims to increase the White House's capacity for hosting dignitaries and events, with a focus on a 22,000 square foot ballroom. The building's neoclassical facade features Corinthian columns and large arched windows, creating a grand and elegant entrance.
One of the most striking aspects of the design is the East Wing's extension into the White House lawn, covering approximately 90,000 square feet. This expansion significantly increases the footprint compared to the previous East Wing building, which has been demolished.
The main entrance is located via a grand staircase tucked into the backside corner of the site, along the colonnade. The landscape plans include a Mount Vernon brick pathway and four existing East Garden trees, adding a touch of natural beauty to the entrance.

The environmental review by the National Parks Service found the project's environmental impacts to be adverse but not significant.
